Rihanna Will Always be The Met Gala Queen

It’s almost the first Monday in May, the fashion Olympics, the event of the season, and the most hotly debated red carpet of the year: The Met Gala. Needless to say, we are excited. To help prepare for the spectacle, the Coveteur staff has selected our favorite looks from past galas, from Cher’s Bob Mackie feather sleaves to Rihanna’s legendary canary train. – Maraya

OUTFITS OF THE WEEK

The Coveteur Staff share the Met Gala looks we’re still thinking about.

Emma Chamberlain (2022) in Louis Vuitton

I’m going to tell my kids this was one of Henry VIII’s wives—she looked like royalty. —Yasmin Coutinho, Senior Casting Director

Come on, is it even a contest? The train, the headpiece, the fur—Rihanna will always be queen of the Met Gala.—Hilary George-Parkin, Managing Editor

Lady Gaga (2019) in Brandon Maxwell

Why have one outfit when you can have four? –Tom Lyon, Marketing and Design Coordinator

Ashley Olsen (2011) in Dior

Aligning with the theme of Alexander McQueen’s Savage Beauty, her look feels authentic to her; not costumey. –Lauren Malanga, Campaign Manager

Anne Hathaway (2023) in Versace

In retrospect, this Met look seems to be when Anne Hathaway secured her status as the fashion girl that we now know her to be. Her stylist is incredible. – Caroline Good, Associate Director of Brand Partnerships

Miley Cyrus (2013) in Marc Jacobs

I’m not one for peacocking, so I love when someone dials up the volume in a manner that still feels enviable and true to themselves—so for Frances McDormand, this would naturally incur plumage and a cape. For 2013’s Punk: Chaos to Couture, Miley Cyrus wore a slinky mesh column dress from the Marc Jacobs runway complete with the perfect spiked ‘do. I still think about it 10+ years later. —Camille Freestone, Senior Style Editor

Lily Collins (2019) in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture wearing Cartier Jewelry

Starting the night off with the pink carpet, the energy was already immaculate going into the event. In her interpretation of Notes on Camp, Lily Collins channeled Priscilla Presley in the best way possible (not that there is a bad way to embody her notable fashion sense). The feminine and seemingly innocent bows, all white, and ruffles are great, but the edgy black heels and foot tat really tie it all together. –Lauren Malanga, Campaign Manager

Cher (1971) in Bob Mackie
