The Patron Saint of the French Riviera

Though it is an almost meaningless word, I have to say that of all the red carpets, Cannes is the most chic—that is, the most distinctly European and the most high fashion-conscious. Bella Hadid always signals her fashion history knowledge with something fabulous and archival (who can forget her gilded Schiaparelli lungs?!), Isabelle Huppert radiates her steely, French cool in sunglasses, and it seems as though stylists opt for their most elegant risks. Today, the Coveteur staff shares our favorite looks from this year’s Cannes, from Hunter Schafer’s Armani gown to Yseult in Christian Dior. – Maraya

OUTFITS OF THE WEEK

The Coveteur Staff share the Cannes Film Festival looks we’re still thinking about.

Hunter Schafer in Armani

Hunter Schafer and her stylist Dara are a match made in fashion heaven; I love seeing what they come up with for the red carpet. This particular custom Armani Privé gown is one of my favorite black tie ensembles I’ve seen in a while. And the styling/hair and makeup? Flawless. –Camille Freestone, Senior Style Editor

Isabelle Huppert in Balenciaga Couture

On anyone else, a couture bathrobe would look shtick-y. On her? Inspired. –Hilary George-Parkin, Managing Editor

Anya Taylor-Joy’s Straw Chapeau

Between Hunter Schafer’s milkmaid kerchief and the reappearance of the infamous Jacquemus Bomba hat, headpieces stole the show for me. I found Anya Taylor-Joy’s flat straw hat, tied around her neck with a black ribbon, particularly charming. It was a perfect moment of seaside pastiche, and the gold circle framing the back of her head looked like a medieval halo—the patron saint of the French Riviera. –Maraya Fisher, Newsletter Editor

Bella Hadid in Vintage Versace

Is it a Cannes red carpet if Bella doesn’t make an appearance? Thankfully, she graced the carpet in YSL and vintage Dolce, but my personal favorite is the yellow vintage Versace minidress. –Katie Mok, Editorial Assistant

Yseult in Christian Dior

Courtesy of Dior

One of the many skirt suits we’ve seen at the festival (more on that trend here), this Dior New Look revival is a literal reference done right. I hope Yseult gets to keep the hat—it looks very practical for sunny days by the sea. –Hilary George-Parkin, Managing Editor

Alessandra Ambrosio in Peter Dundas and Pomellato Jewelry

This is the epitome of elevated coquette. –Lauren Malanga, Campaign Manager

Hunter Schafer in Prada

Hunter Schafer in Prada is the subdued yet elevated fashion moment I crave from the film festival taking over the South of France. I want whimsy, and nostalgia, and having a trans woman on such an iconic red carpet with a classic silhouette was deeply moving to me. Stun 10/10. –Sarah Lou Kiernan, Social Media Editor

Bella Hadid in YSL

If Bella Hadid has 100 fans, I am one of them. If she has one fan, it is me. If she has zero fans, I am dead. IDC what anyone says—I love a nude dress! –Ama Kwarteng, Beauty Director
